Situation during the Covid-19

With the island of Madagascar almost totally cut off from the rest of the world since the travel restrictions imposed by the pandemic, the information available is incomplete. It is clear that there are many victims in densely populated areas.

However, thanks to frequent telephone contacts with Switzerland, we know that the Maison des Enfants has been faced with an unusual influx of children. In addition, the daily budget per child has risen from €1/day to €2.50/day, due to supply difficulties caused by the cessation of essential imports such as rice. For the moment, medical and school supplies are still awaiting shipment to Madagascar.

In the capital, Tananarive, economic difficulties have led to an increase in street violence and banditry, and the Foyers des Jeunes Filles was the victim of an armed attack, fortunately without serious injury or death. As a result, a professional guard system had to be financed.

Nevertheless, the girls are continuing their training and progressing well, despite the fact that school was interrupted intermittently during 2020 due to the pandemic.
